NOVA Chemicals Marks New Era Under Borouge International with Major Turnaround and Launch of Two Recycled PE Grades

Three months after its acquisition by the new global entity Borouge Group International AG in March 2026, NOVA Chemicals Corporation—including its major Joffre, Alberta site—continues to operate under its registered name while contributing to Borouge International's polyolefins portfolio, even as the Joffre complex recently undertook a major 44-day planned maintenance turnaround at its Ethylene One unit, a facility that first started up in 1979 and marks the company's 50-year legacy in petrochemicals. Simultaneously, NOVA Chemicals has reinforced its commitment to sustainability with the commercial launch of two new mechanically recycled polyethylene grades, SYNDIGO rPE-IN3 and rPE-IN4, produced at its advanced SYNDIGO1 recycling plant in Connersville; these rLLDPE grades, made entirely from post-consumer recycled films such as stretch wraps and mixed retail plastics, are now available across North America for non-food flexible packaging applications like trash liners, shrink films, and heavy-duty sacks, with the company planning to introduce a food-contact-grade recycled LLDPE by late 2026. As Borouge International integrates NOVA's world-scale manufacturing assets—which include three ethylene and two polyethylene facilities on a 900-acre complex employing 800 permanent workers and over 350 contractors, producing 3.4 billion pounds of polyethylene annually—NOVA is concurrently advancing its circular economy goals, demonstrating through its SYNDIGO1 plant the viability of "film-to-film" recycling and aiming for full operational capacity in 2026, while also engaging with industry peers at the Plastics Recycling Conference to discuss future recycling challenges and opportunities.
