ERCO Worldwide's Journey from Spend Efficiency to Shutdown Amid Soaring Electricity Costs
2023-07-18
In 2019, ERCO Worldwide, a Toronto-based specialty chemical company with over 120 years of operational history, selected the Coupa Business Spend Management (BSM) Platform to digitally transform its procurement and supply chain functions, aiming to automate internal spend processes, enhance sourcing reach, and streamline invoice activities through tools like Sourcing, InvoiceSmash, and Supplier Management, a move underscored by strategic procurement director Ben Hughes as a cultural alignment focused on delivering mutual customer success. However, this strategic optimization was starkly contradicted just four years later when ERCO announced the closure of its Grande Prairie, Alberta, facility in 2022—a decision finalized in 2023—citing "financially unsustainable" electricity rates that had surged its monthly power bills from approximately $750,000 to between $1.2 million and $1.4 million, ultimately forcing the company to shift sodium chlorate production to lower-cost jurisdictions such as Vancouver, Manitoba, Quebec, or Chile. The closure, which ended over 30 years of local operations and eliminated at least 25 jobs, not only highlighted the severe impact of regional energy cost disparities on industrial competitiveness but also prompted Grande Prairie city council and Alberta municipalities to urgently seek quantitative assessments of how electrical rate structures affect business viability and employment across the province.
