400MW solar plant in New South Wales to supply 45% of BOC Australia’s energy needs

2025-04-11

In a landmark tri-party agreement, BOC Australia, a subsidiary of industrial gas giant Linde, has inked a 10-year solar-based power purchase agreement (PPA) that will replace 45% of its grid electricity needs on Australia’s east coast with renewable energy, significantly advancing its parent company’s goal of a 35% global emissions cut by 2035. Signed between BOC Australia, ACEN Australia, and ZEN Energy, the deal hinges on ZEN Energy securing 23% of the output from ACEN Australia’s 400MW New England stage one solar PV plant in New South Wales—which began operating in March 2023 and features roughly one million solar modules—through a separate 10-year PPA, with ACEN supplying BOC via an Electricity Retail Agreement until 2035. This strategic collaboration will enable BOC to lower its Scope Two emissions while offering competitively priced, lower-carbon industrial gases to its customers across Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria, with ZEN Energy’s CEO Anthony Garnaut hailing it as a tangible, large-scale renewable transition and BOC Australia’s CEO Theo Martin emphasizing its dual benefit of reducing emissions and enhancing customer decarbonization, all as ACEN prepares to add a 320MW second stage and a 400MWh battery energy storage system to the New England site by 2026.
